Now you have registered a domain name. You have created a nice website. How can one see it on Internet? It has to be put on a computer which is always connected to Internet. The computer should have nesessary softwares to serve your files on the Internet. This computer is called a 'web server'
A web server will have a unique number called as IP address. It will have an server operating system such as 'Windows server 2000' or 'FreeBSD'. It should then have a web server software such as IIS or Apache. Additionally there may be a DSN software and other softwares which may be required by your website files.
This web server can host many websites. This system is called as shared web hosting. If 1 server is used for 1 website, it is called as dedicated web server to that website.
The web server shold be powerful and fast enouf to serve requests for your websites from around the world. This may be high if your site is popular. Thus a powerful high end computer with latest hardware and software is most desirable. You need to balance between performance and cost based on your website requirements. |
